Underwater World
There is something magical and mystical about the feeling of being underwater. Time stands still, sounds are muffled, curious forms and creatures that seem otherworldly come into view and we imagine mermaids & shipwrecks living deep under the glistening surface.
The children at school had been studying water and so creating an underwater world or scene seemed the ideal way to re-create that underwater feeling, mainly with the materials we had laying around at home.
This project was in 2 parts: Part one was to make our own papers. We created patterns, shapes, textures and colours that reminded us of being underwater by decorating & distressing plain white paper. We used wax crayons to do rubbing onto lego or fabric or wood. We used paint stamped on with bubble wrap or scrunched up paper, we even used the kitchen paper used to mop up our mess! We saved everything and this became our tools for the next part of the project.
Part two was taught this week via Zoom to Frankie’s school and we used the handmade papers from the week before to create our own underwater scenes. Using an open sided cardboard box, and their papers, they made underwater worlds that gave a sense of depth, a sense of layers and light & dark. I loved the way the kids just got inventive!
